How to Install A Picture Style for your Canon Digital SLR.

1. Download the desired Picture Style. i.e Ciniplus, Marvel, or Technicolor CineStyle from the links below.

2. Connect your Canon camera to your computer.

3. Open/Run the EOS Utility Program.

4. In The Menu select “Register User Defined Style”

5. A new window will open up with “User Def.1, User Def.2, User Def.2”

6. Click Open Folder Icon and find your downloaded Picture Style and install into your desired User Def.1, 2, or 3 location.

7. Enjoy shooting a new dynamic Picture Style to suit your photographic needs.

The Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor is used for viewing videos and still images from cameras or camcorders that support HDMI output. It enhances the images along the edges of the 5” screen using peaking support, and allows for precise focusing while displaying images at 800 x 480 resolution.

The Sony monitor can be set up in the hot shoe for video purposes but a better set up would be for the Edelkrone rigs for videoing documentaries etc.

Edelkrone have really hit the nail on the head with this new video rig especially with all the DLSR’s hitting the scene. Its a good change in video camera set ups. This here is what edelkrone call “Your camcorder is back” Modula Three” Kit. The set up is very much like using the Canon XL2 Video camera. This piece of kit is excellent for teaming up with a Canon 5D Mark III or Nikon D800 or Panasonic GH2 with Monitor and Audio connectivity via a Zoom H1 which can also sit on the bracket.

Definitely a must have for video journalists on the move for video recording.

A run and gun set up for video journalists.. The Zoom H1 audio recorder connected to the Canon 5D mark III with 2.5mm jack via Line Out on the Zoom to Mic input on the 5DIII.

Input level is set at 40 in the Zoom H1 and Dial down the Audio half way on the 5DIII to reduce audio blowout/peaking.

Instant sync and the audio is excellent quality.

[•] InFrame AF Spot Focusing Canon 5D Mark III on Flickr.

Here is an example for manually spot focusing.

As soon as you press the AF selection button the camera will highlight the AF point in RED.

To adjust a Single AF point press your AF selection Button and wind the shutter dial to move the Single AF point into the preferred location within all the AF points. Also the Multi-contoller is a good little joystick to use to change the Single AF point for the Up & Down direction.

I tend to activate the very centre Single AF point for 90% of my photography which is handy for focusing on peoples eyes and giving greater control on what you want focused.

The outer edge Single AF points are excellent for framing a subject in focus to the side of a landscape.

[•] Light meter reading Cheat sheet on Flickr.

Here is a cheat sheet for learning the settings for reading your light meter in your camera while you take a photograph.

The goal is to set your desired aperture e.g f5.6 and the adjust your shutter speed to allow the “I” to meet into the centre of the light meter.

Note: If you choose a shutter speed below 1/60 Second you will require a tripod.

Manual Photography Cheat sheet on Flickr.

Here is a cheat sheet for learning the settings for manual Photography.

When light decreases, ISO needs to increase the —> 12800.

When light decreases, aperture value needs to be open. Therefore the f-stop will be larger i.e f1.8.

When light increases, shutter speed needs to decrease. i.e Slow your shutter speed for light to enter and stay open longer.

The more open the aperture / f-stop, the deeper the depth of field (i.e., the more stuff is in focus). 

Remember to check that your white balance is appropriate to the lighting situation.(Auto is good to use until you master manual photography.

Aperture, Shutter & ISO all need to be balanced to get a well-exposed photo
